Christmas drive leaves smiles and a festive holiday cheer
Children and staff members anxiously waited outside their homes to welcome the team of elves who handed out packets of sweets.
The annual Moot Christmas drive has once again showed that being friendly and having a kind heart does not cost a thing.
The third annual drive came to an end on Saturday, December 19.
It kicked off on Wednesday where the team drove through the Waverley area.
A total of 10 000 packets of sweets were handed out over the four days.
Those involved were Kilnerpark Security (KPS), various emergency services and policing in the area, the CPF and Volkswagen Beetle Club, Villieria SAPS, Mon Ami Trauma Troops, Pet Shop SA, First Help, the water wing and two ambulances from Life Line.
On Friday, the trek got underway from Jakaranda Children’s home.
The children and staff members anxiously waited outside their homes to welcome the team of elves who handed out packets of sweets.
As the team made their way through the East Lynne and Jan Niemand Park areas, community members stood in the streets where they were spoiled with a convoy of 50 vehicles, and of course, Father Christmas on the back of the truck to greet everyone along the way.
Thursday’s route covered Queenswood and the last evening saw the team visiting Rietondale, Rivieria and the Moot.
Community members hauled out their camping chairs to relax and watch the spectacle, joined by their four-legged friends along the route. They enjoyed the festive vibe as cars in the procession were decorated with fairy lights and tinsel, which made the ride so much more enticing.
The oldest member of the community who was part of the drive, was 90-year-old Corrie Schoeman, with the youngest being twins Logan and Arthur Prinsloo (six-weeks-old).
Ancelize van der Kooi of KPS thanked the community members who welcomed them each night with a great spirit and a smile.
“Putting a smile on someone’s face is the reason we take on the Christmas drive each year.
“It is hard work to put everything together, but at the end of the day it was all worth it,” she said.
Spokesperson of Villieria police station, Warrant Officer Marinda Austin, said the drive got everyone in a good spirit.
“Emotionally it has been a tough past couple of months.
“We wanted to put smiles back on everyone’s faces and celebrate the festive season. We reached our goal.
“Thank you to all the team members who worked behind the scenes to once again make this year’s drive a successful one.
“Enjoy your festive season with your loved ones. Next year we will be back with a bang,” said Austin.
