Truck busted with bags of stolen cables
“The TMPD has for this reason, established a dedicated cable theft unit that works around the clock patrolling hot spots areas. The TMPD will continue to work very hard to plague out this criminal activity.”
A truck driver and two other male suspects, who could not account for a load of cables transported by the truck, were arrested by Tshwane metro police on Friday morning.
Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the men were allegedly heading to a big scrapyard at the plots.
Mahamba said the truck was stopped and searched by TMPD task team members who were doing patrols the R513 and Brits Road.

“Underneath the scrap metal the officers discovered bags full of suspected stolen copper cables.
“Upon further interrogation the suspects mentioned that they were from another scrapyard in Cullinan and they had bought the cables from people who brought them in.”
He said the value of the copper cables found was at an estimated street value of close to R1-million.
He said the three suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen cables and would appear in court soon.
Mahamba said cable theft was a great concern in Tshwane.
“It results in major electricity outbreaks costing the city millions of rands.

He said the recent bust was currently being checked for possible links to the existing cable theft syndicates that were already under investigation.
