Local artist’s condition is worse since accident on N1

"The doctors informed us that at this point of time, there is not much more they can do for our father."

A singer and guitarist from Pretoria, Christo Louw was admitted to hospital last week after being involved in a serious accident on the N1 highway.

The 47-year-old has since then been in the ICU in Steve Biko academic hospital and has not regained consciousness.

Daughter Izelda Louw (20) said at the moment he is between life and death.

“The doctors informed us that at this point of time, there is not much more they can do for our father.

“My brother (Hanno) and I were called to the hospital on Monday.

“We thought they wanted to switch off the machines, but they explained that our father is on maximum dose of adrenaline and antibiotics which severely affects his body,” she said.

Louw, owner of Bees & Boer Kroeg en Restaurant in Sinoville, was on his way home to Montana after visiting a friend in Silverton.

The police were busy with a roadblock and a vehicle wanted to get back into the road when it crashed into Louw’s car.

The accident occurred at around 21:20 just before the Daspoort off-ramp on the N4.

His left lung collapsed and he had bleeding on his right lung. His stomach ruptured, his spleen had to be removed and he suffered damage to his liver and kidneys.

As they removed the spleen, he contracted infection.

They also inserted a device into his brain to monitor the pressure, but the device was removed yesterday.

Since then, his condition has worsened greatly.

“It is devastating to see our father like this.

“We made special plans for Christmas, and in the blink of an eye, everything changed.

“At this stage, we are just trying to keep our heads above the water,” Izelda said.

Mother Joanie passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack.

Louw, who is part of the band Tolbos, was suppose to have his last performance on Sunday, December 19.

Band member Caroline Bosch said it was one of the hardest performances without Louw.

“A lot of tears were shed, but I did this show for Christo.

“We have been performing for the past two years,” she said.

Tolbos was awarded as the Best Duet of the Year during the South African country music artist foundation awards.

“If there is one thing I can say about Christo, he is always willing to help and assist where he can.

“Please keep us and the family in your thoughts during this time.

“We pray for Christo’s recovery,” said Bosch.
