Progress made at burnt Centurion substation

The extensive damage to the substation has affected the power supply to Kloofsig and Lyttleton.

Repairs are underway after the Kloofsig substation in Centurion caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

At around 01:00, emergency services responded to a raging fire at the Kloofsig substation. They successfully managed to extinguish the fire, said Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.

“Tshwane’s technicians completed the excavation, exposed the cables and cable identification has now commenced in earnest at the Kloofsig substation. After the identification of the cables has been completed, cable termination will be done to the equipment (T4) which facilitates power supply to the consumers from the high voltage network.”

Bokaba said the extensive damage to the substation has affected the power supply to Kloofsig and Lyttleton.
“The cause of the fire has not been established yet, however, investigations are underway,” he said.

Few of the customers that were affected by the outage have been backfed from the nearby secondary substation.

“The City’s technicians have managed to gather all the necessary material and are exploring alternative ways to restore power while repairs to the Kloofsig substation are being considered.”
