Tshwane concerned over high Covid-19 infection rate among healthcare workers

Even though the metro had recorded a significant drop in cases this week, there was an increase in infections among health practitioners.

The Tshwane metro said it was concerned over the high infection rate among the metro’s healthcare employees.

Covid-19 cases in Tshwane drastically dropped from 25 000 to 14 000 this week.

Mayoral spokesperson Sipho Stuurman said even though the metro had recorded a significant drop in cases this week, there was an increase in infections among health practitioners.

“As of the beginning of November 2021, over 200 Tshwane healthcare workers tested positive for Covid-19,” he said.

“Currently nearly 60 of these healthcare workers are in isolation.”

Stuurman said this was worrisome as the metro’s healthcare workers played a significant role in the fight against Covid-19.

“Healthcare workers are at the forefront educating residents about the virus, they also conduct screening and tests for our residents,” he said.

“Furthermore, they are also tasked with treating and caring for patients at our clinics and other health facilities. This makes our healthcare workers a critical driving force behind our comprehensive Covid-19 management strategy.”

Stuurman appealed to residents to play their part and remain vigilant over the festive season by adhering to all known Covid-19 safety protocols, such as social distancing, wearing of masks and sanitising regularly.

“Furthermore, the City would like to send a word of gratitude to all the frontline healthcare workers for their hard work.”
