Power to be restored following Centurion substation fire

“Testing will be done after completing the Barnard Park substation’s cable identification, which is expected to be done around lunchtime today [Thursday].”

Residents in Centurion can expect power to be restored on Thursday afternoon following a fire at the Kloofsig substation.

The substation caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning leaving areas such as Kloofsig, Lyttleton and Barnard Park without electricity.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokana said technicians have made significant progress overnight in their efforts to restore power to the residents.

“The following was achieved at the Kloofsig substation; the installation of the switch gear was completed and cable termination was completed,” he said.

“Testing will be done after completing the Barnard Park substation’s cable identification, which is expected to be done around lunchtime today.”

Bokaba said the necessary equipment required to restore power was delivered at the Barnard Park substation and the termination of cables was underway. This work is expected to be completed early this afternoon.

“The identification of feeder cables from Lyttleton and Die Hoewes has already begun, which would be followed by the joining of the feeder cables to the Barnard Park substation,” he said.

“Once all these processes have been completed, testing would commence from around lunchtime.”

He said due to the incessant rain delaying the work, the anticipated gradual restoration of power is during the afternoon.
