Traffic police urge drivers to prioritise other road users’ safety
“The GTP will also patrol freeways as part of visible policing to ensure there is no jay-walking and that drivers adhere to the prescribed speed limits. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable with about 40% of road fatalities emanating from this group."
The Gauteng traffic police have urged drivers to prioritise the safety of other road users during this festive season.
GTP spokesperson Sello Maremane said their message, which followed after several accidents were reported during the first week of December, was particularly aimed at public transport operators.
“Traffic volumes are expected to increase on Gauteng’s major roads as more people are expected to travel to various destinations to spend time with their families this festive season’s weekend,” he said.
To promote road safety, Maremane said they would embark on various law enforcement operations in the province.
These operations would include pedestrian operations, drunken driving operations, visible patrolling, K78 roadblocks, driver and vehicle fitness operations, speed law enforcement operations, reckless and negligent driving operations and incident management.

“The road safety unit will undertake several road safety awareness campaigns as part of the festive season. These activities are aimed at changing the attitude and behaviour of the road users.
“The GTP will work around the clock to ensure the rules and regulations of the road are adhered to during the festive season. This is important to ensure many lives are being saved on Gauteng roads,” he said, adding that they would also be “out in full force” with their recently purchased high-performance vehicles which were fitted with cutting-edge crime-fighting technology to increase their visibility in crime hotspots and to enhance road safety.
“The GTP will also patrol freeways as part of visible policing to ensure there is no jay-walking and that drivers adhere to the prescribed speed limits. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable with about 40% of road fatalities emanating from this group,” he said.
Taverns, shebeens and other liquor outlets were also expected to be monitored closely to ensure drunk drivers were removed from public roads.
“There will be no room for lawlessness during the festive season,” Maremane said.
