Ways to keep your child entertained during the summer break

Holidays can be a great time to bond with your children and maybe even let your own inner child come out to play.

Need some ideas for keeping the kids busy over the summer break?

Holidays can be a great time to bond with your children and maybe even let your own inner child come out to play.

It’s best to put a little bit of advanced planning into the holidays and prepare yourself with an arsenal of activities to keep the little ones out of mischief.

Teacher Riana Ehlers shared some great ideas on how to keep your child entertained this festive season.

“Take a potato, cut it in half and cut out patterns.

“Dip it into paint and make use of newspapers that you can use to wrap Christmas presents, or cover your booklets.”

Children can use polystyrene and cut out different shapes and hang it up.

Ehlers said that another idea to keep children entertained, is to take pebbles and paint it and put it in a sandpit.

“It is like a little treasure hunt. It can keep the kids busy for hours to find the pebbles.

“Use macaroni or any kind of noodle, paint it and make a bracelet or a necklace that can also be used as a Christmas present.

“Have mum or dad print you a picture of Santa and use cotton wool for the beard, leaves or sand to decorate Santa.”

She added that playing ‘Master Chef’ is another fun activity for a group of friends.

“Provide the base and get as much as possible ingredients to top your pizza.

“For a Christmas decoration, use a pine cone, spray it and put it on the tree.”

A pine cone is a great idea to use as Christmas decoration.

A special treat, is to design your own little vehicle and use it as a drive-in car.

“Kids can use boxes or cardboard to design their own vehicle for a mini drive-in at home,” she said.

This is what some of our readers have to say what they are going to keep their children busy with:

Soke Rabie
“Kids must also have duties – their own rooms, cupboards and suitcases, cleaning and reorganising, donating obsolete toys and clothes, recycling and redecorating. Developing their own initiative and creativity. Also learning to spoil the family with a cake, cupcakes and decorate. Nice picnic outing that does not cost a lot of money on entrance fees. Kids can invite friends for a Chinese braai or even make pancakes with nice fillings.”

Rita de Villiers
“This holiday we will be playing board games, plant some garden seedlings, make music, hold a concert and go for walks every day. Paint, mosaic art projects and reading stories are also on our to-do-list.”

Amorie Wolhuter
“We will be visiting Irene dairy farm, Rietvlei nature reserve, swim, paint and bake. We will also be making presents for family and friends for Christmas.”

Anita Burger
“We are going to make a vegetable garden, with herbs for pesto sauce. Kids can learn about gardening and different vegetables. The kids can get dirty, and then they can play in the mud and inflated pools.”

Cheralee Lubbe
“Baking cookies, swimming, playing board games, cycling and tackling some crafty things are some of the activities we will be doing as a family.”

Chantelle Calvert-McKenzie
“My kids will be horse riding, learn how to do woodwork, paint murals on the walls and just learn how to be a kid again.”
