Foundation covers books at Soshangaan primary school

"Kids in these schools have parents who are unemployed and therefore unable to cater to their needs."

Dr Marcia Matala foundation covered 185 books for children at Soshangaan primary school on Saturday.

The foundation also cleaned the school premises during their visit.

The director of the foundation, Sibongile Mtshweni said the school was chosen because there are a lot of less-fortunate children.

“I am aware of the challenges as it is in the same area I live in. As an emerging organisation wanting to lend a helping hand, there was no better place to start than where there is a serious need.”

She said the organisation was founded and registered in 2020.

“We saw the need to register it. Founder Matala had the vision to eradicate poverty through social responsibility as she had no easy upbringing.”

Mtshweni said they will also be doing the same drive at Ontlametse primary school in Hebron on Saturday, January 22.

“For this year we only have two schools, we are hoping next year and in the coming years there will be more. Kids in these schools have parents who are unemployed and therefore unable to cater to the needs of the kids academically. School uniforms are a challenge also.”

Chairperson of the SGB at Soshangaan primary school, Frank Gomba said some of the children come to school without proper uniforms.

“It is very painful, so if maybe the school can be adopted, things might be better. These are challenges that the management and the SGB have. Having a sponsor would make things easier for us.”

School principal Steve Matlou said he would appreciate if they could also be assisted with creating a computer lab at the school.

“We are living in the world of technology, we want to create a class that will teach learners computer-related subjects so we can give them the basics at primary level.

“That would be something that we would really be grateful for because we can teach them to be able to use computers at an early age.”
