City congratulates winners of Tshwane Women in Sports Awards
"Sports have great potential to empower women and girls by breaking down gender stereotypes while instilling discipline and developing leadership skills."
The city has congratulated the winners and nominees of Tshwane Women in Sports Awards hosted at the University of Pretoria Future Africa Campus.
MMC for Social Development and Community Services Peggy de Bruin said the awards were a great initiative driven by the Tshwane Sports Council and the Gauteng Sports Confederation aimed at uplifting women in sport and ensuring their importance and value was recognised.
“The city fully supports these awards as sports have great potential to empower women and girls by breaking down gender stereotypes while instilling discipline and developing leadership skills.”

De Bruin said that sports served as a source of national pride and assists in building social and cultural bridges by bringing people from all the different walks of life together.
She said that the sporting sector had suffered the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which saw the sector undergo budget cuts.
“Furthermore, the livelihood of those who rely on the sports industry has been at risk, including professional athletes who have lost potential earnings from prize money events.
“We remain hopeful that the national government will consider lifting restrictions on live events and stadiums so that people can attend games and matches,” De Bruin said.
“I would like to salute all the women who have been nominated. You are all winners.”
De Bruin thanked all the sponsors whose contributions made the event possible.
“Let us continue to work together to give more opportunities for and access to sport for young girls and women,” she concluded.
