Brooklyn police station records most motor vehicle and motorcycle theft in the country
The station had 251 such cases in three months - up from 225 the previous year over the same period.
The Brooklyn police station has recorded the highest number of motor vehicle and motorcycle thefts in the entire country this past festive season, according to crime figures released last week.
The numbers cover the festive season period from October to December 2021.
The station had 251 such cases in the three months – up from 225 the previous year over the same period.
Garsfontein ranked eighth with 106 reported cases while Silverton had 63 cases.
In carjacking, Silverton took the 20th spot nationally with 43 cases – up from 38 reported the previous year.
Statistics over the past few years showed that this crime category in this precinct has been growing since 2019.
The station also appeared in the 20th spot for trio crimes (carjacking, residential premises robbery and non-residential) nationally. It registered 93 cases, an increase from 69 cases the previous year.
Truck hijackings also show a slow upwards trend in the Bronkhorstspruit region, with the local police station coming in at the ninth spot nationally.
This as it recorded eight cases – up from seven. In 2019, only two cases were reported.
When it comes to theft out of motor vehicles, Brooklyn came in 13th with 163 cases.

A total of 1 487 serious crimes (such as murder, assault, robbery and shoplifting) were reported at the Brooklyn station during the period in question.
Two hundred and forty commercial crimes (theft and fraud related to businesses) were reported at the Brooklyn station while Garsfontein had 164 cases.
Garsfontein also had 133 burglaries at residential premises.
Silverton had 22 robberies at non-residential premises.
Brooklyn had 302 cases of theft opened in the three months and 65 cases of common robbery. The station also had 572 property-related crimes.
Police minister Bheki Cele presented the statistics on Friday.
He said nationally there was a drop in common robbery, sexual assault and attempted sexual offences except for murder.
He said police plans during the festive season “ensured that crime was kept to a minimum”.
