Private school teacher accused of rape denied bail

The boy later allegedly stolen his mother's bankcard to buy the teacher a PlayStation 4 so he would to stop bullying him.

The Pretoria magistrate’s court denied a private school teacher accused of raping a boy bail on Wednesday.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the teacher (29) faced a charge of raping a grade 6 learner at his school.

“It is alleged that on May 5, the mother of the boy (12) noticed some behavioural changes in the child – he did not eat his favourite meal.”

Mahanjana said the mother later noticed that the boy battled to sleep and was bleeding.

“The following day, she noticed he had withdrawn money from her account,” said Mahanjana.

“When she confronted him about it, he told her he had taken the money to buy a teacher a PlayStation 4 so he would stop bullying him.”

Mahanjana said hospital tests confirmed the boy had been raped.

She said the boy told his mother the teacher had raped him.

She said the mother then reported the matter to the police and the teacher was arrested on May 18.

In court, the accused asked to be released on bail.

The state prosecutor, Lorinda van Pittius, told the court that it was not in the best interest of justice, for the accused to be released on bail as the school had yet to suspend the teacher.

“He might pose a threat to the victim.”

“Therefore, no exceptional circumstances were warranting his release on bail.”

The teacher was denied bail and the case was postponed to June 13.
