Metro donates wheelchairs to needy residents
The metro visited an old aged home in Eersterust and a family of 13 in Winterveld to donate wheelchairs to needy residents.
Residents of a home for the aged in Eersterust received wheelchairs as a donation from the Tshwane metro on Thursday, July 7.
MMC for Social Development and Community Services, Peggy de Bruin, handed over four wheelchairs during a visit to the home.
De Bruin said this initiative was in the spirit of the upcoming Mandela Day on July 18 and called on local businesses to work with the metro to help communities around Tshwane.
“We also visited a family of 13 in Winterveldt and donated a wheelchair to a young girl in the family who is living with disabilities,” she said.
“The donation came after I was made aware of the difficulties that the family face on a day-to-day basis.
De Bruin said it is her job as MMC to ensure that the family receives support.
“I have also ensured that the family is provided with additional support services such as registering the household on the metro’s indigent register.
“The register is offered through my department and is aimed at assisting residents who are unable to pay for municipal services. It also serves as a vehicle to fight poverty,” de Bruin added.
She called on local non-governmental organisations to work with the metro to help the elderly and other vulnerable groups in the community.
