SPCA says goodbye to loyal volunteer
Kruge volunteered for the SPCA without pay for 18 years.
The Centurion SPCA said goodbye to one of its most loyal and well-liked volunteers.
Burger Kruge has been working at the SPCA for 18 years, where he worked as a volunteer and never asked for a single paycheck.
Fellow volunteer, Hettie Miller, said he will be dearly missed by everyone at the SPCA.
Kruge will be moving to Mossel Bay and said he will look back at his time at the SPCA with very happy memories.
Miller said Kruge was a hard worker who never abandoned his duties or did a half-job.
“He got there every morning before anyone else when his father dropped him off and left late in the afternoon after he made sure all his work was done,” she said.
Kruge was in charge of feeding the dogs and cats kept at the SPCA, cleaning their cages and doing compatibility tests for adoptions among many other duties.
Miller, who has been with the SPCA for many years, welcomes anyone to join and volunteer.
“We need all the help we can get here and people can join us whenever they want.
“We are especially in need of people who are willing to get their hands dirty and love to work with animals.
“It’s not easy working here but we do it out of love which is what makes it so rewarding in the end,” said Miller.
The SPCA also has a used goods store and a second-hand book store which attracts many visitors.
Residents are encouraged to donate books and items around their houses that they no longer use.
All proceeds from these shops go directly toward maintaining the centre and keeping the dogs and cats fed and healthy.
These dogs and cats need to be fed regularly and the centre goes through 80 kilograms of food every day to feed the dogs alone.
During the colder months, the animals are also in need of blankets to keep warm.
Residents who wish to donate to the centre can do so using one of three methods:
– They can buy from their usual supplier and drop it off at one of the SPCA’s branches,
– order online with Takealot https://bit.ly/2wHFQp0 for delivery or
– donate online at https://spcapta.org.za/product/once-off-donation/ and select “buy pet food” from the drop-down menu.
