Use the 67 minutes for Mandela Day to keep a community clean

A homeless shelter in Akasia is asking residents to join them as they clean up a local illegal dumping site.

Looking for a place in Pretoria North to take part in the international 67 minutes for Mandela Day initiative?

Life-Changing Projects, a homeless shelter in Akasia, is inviting you to join them as they clean up a local illegal dumpsite.

Tebogo Mpufane, project manager for the organisation, explained that the illegal dumpsite started as a small patch but has now mushroomed into “something bigger”.

“One can smell the rot when the wind blows,” he said.

This will be their first international Nelson Mandela Day 67 minutes of community service project.

They hoped that the initiative will give the formerly homeless men in their care an opportunity to show appreciation to mother nature while keeping their environment clean.

To make this clean-up a success, the non-profit organisation needs the help of the community and businesses in the area.

The project kicks off at 09:00 on July 18 at 18 Iris Street, 3rd Avenue Heatherdale, Akasia.

For more information on how you can join hands with Life-Changing Projects to make a difference, contact Tebogo Sehlwane on 082 364 4215.

Life-Changing Projects can house 200 men and they work closely with social workers and various stakeholders to ensure that beneficiaries can be reintegrated into society with skills that would equip them to stay off the streets.
