210 bags of rubbish collected in Nelson Mandela Drive clean-up

“I believe Madiba would be proud of what we are doing in the city."

More than 210 bags of rubbish were collected during the clean up of Nelson Mandela Drive in the Pretoria CBD this week.

Two invasive trees were also removed.

The clean-up was meant to support residents in the spirit and build-up to Mandela Day, according to City Property marketing manager Lize Nel.

Nelson Mandela Day is on July 18.

The clean-up was not only to beautify the area, but to also reduce illegal activities.

“Over the next week, we will be transforming this environment,” said City Property managing director Jeffrey Wapnick.

Wapnick said they wanted to create a safe area in the CBD.

“We will be clearing the area of rubbish such as drug materials and vegetation. From my visit to the site, it seems an easy place for criminals to hide.

Wapnick invited the Tshwane metro as well as local institutions, businesses and residents to join the initiative.

“We want this to be a collective effort that will have a lasting impact.”
