Elderly left with no power for nine days
Their son, Stefan feels like the municipality is completely ignoring their pleas.
An elderly Centurion couple has been in the dark for nine days after the metro failed to reconnect their electricity last Monday.
Jan (78) and Makkie (77) Jordaan of Wierdapark were forced to bear a week of cold with no electricity in their home.
Their son, Stefan Jordaan has been fighting tooth and nail for the municipality to get their power restored.
“I have sent them more than 60 messages since last week.
According to Stefan, the metro promised him on numerous occasions that the power would be restored only for them to wait in vain.
“I feel like we are being completely ignored by the metro and that they don’t care about us at all.
“These are old people and it’s the middle of winter.”
The couple are forced to heat up their bath water and make coffee in the mornings on a gas stove.
“It is the middle of winter now and it is freezing at night.
“My mum has to sleep under nine blankets at night just to keep warm.
“This is no way for older people to live,” he said.
Stefan has kept some of their food in his fridge to prevent it from spoiling and going to waste.
He has tried many times to convince them to stay with him until their power is restored but they insist on staying home.
“They are from the older generation and don’t believe in just leaving their house,” said Stefan.
“They are also afraid that the place will be broken into since the alarms are no longer working.”
Stefan said he will persist with the metro until his parents get their power restored.
Comment from the City of Tshwane will be published as soon as it is received.
