Seven horses, two donkeys, 39 dogs, two chickens and a crate full of pigeons were removed by an animal rescue organisation from a property near Hammanskraal last week.
“We came across this hoarding situation the week before and were horrified by the animals’ living conditions,” said Wetnose Animal Rescue Centre manager Veronica van Greunen.
The owners were issued with a warning to get medical attention, sufficient food and to clean up the animals’ living conditions at the property.
Upon following up, it was found none of those things had been done. That was when the organisation jumped into action and got a warrant to remove all the animals.
Van Greunen said the shelter will open a case of animal cruelty against the pet owners. More than 50 animals were thus confiscated on July 8.
More than 10 staff members took part in removing the animals.

“There was nobody else to help so many animals at once and the expense of taking so many additional animals is massive,” she said.
“But we decided that we had to rescue them despite our worries. We left with every vehicle, horsebox, dog trailer and bakkie with crates that we could get hold of to start catching and loading animals,” said Van Greunen.

She highlighted that hoarders usually love animals. They, however, take too many and often don’t have the resources to take care of so many animals.
“It is a very sad situation that started out of love, but ended in neglect.”
The centre is currently filled to the brim with animals and it called on the community to assist.
“We need volunteers to walk dogs, people to adopt dogs to open up kennels, people to attend Pamper a Pooch day and get the dogs washed. Most of all, we need dog food.”
Costs of caring for the animals will increase and you can help by sponsoring a kennel or stable.

Wetnose Animal Rescue Centre was opened in 1999, as a registered non-profit organisation devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of abandoned, abused and neglected animals.
