Soshanguve protesters vandalise substation
The Soshanguve electricity depot and city employees were targeted by the angry community over the rolling blackouts affecting the area.
The Tshwane metro said it would file criminal charges against the Soshanguve residents who recently vandalised metro vehicles and buildings during a service delivery protest.
“It is disheartening when our own communities attack metro employees who are trying to do their work to maintain our electricity network,” said utilities and regional operations MMC Daryl Johnson.
This was after the Soshanguve electricity depot and metro employees were targeted by angry residents.
“Even more disturbing is that there have been many other incidents of intimidation and vandalism of metro infrastructure,” he said.
Johnson further said that illegal connections and load-shedding were the problem and that high electricity demand during winter added to the constrained system.
Mayor Randall Williams also denounced the attacks on social media, stating “it is disappointing that as we launch the newly upgraded Bronkhorstspruit substation, I now must also condemn attacks on metro employees and the continued vandalism of our infrastructure”.
