Fire in Sunnyside student accommodation contained

“It was only a bed that was on fire and no one was injured as a result of the fire.”

A fire broke out in a room at the Nebohoff student accommodation residence in Sunnyside in the early hours of this morning.

The room is situated on the fourth floor of the building.

“I was in my room talking on my phone when I heard people in the street screaming,” said Kganyane Mathebula, a student at the residence.

“The people shouted to the security officer at the residence. Then I heard noises as if things were falling on top of my room.

“I ran and saw the painters who were busy painting our residence running with a fire hose.

“I followed them and there was a lot of smoke everywhere.

“If it wasn’t for them, the room would’ve been burned.”

According to Mathebula, the girl who stays in the room was out when the fire broke.

Emergency service spokesperson Charles Mabaso said they received a call at 08:30 informing them of the fire at Nebohoff.

“The fire was extinguished before the arrival of emergency services.

“It was only a bed that was on fire and no one was injured as a result of the fire.

“The cause of the fire has not yet been determined,” he said.
