Massive police operation to fight against lawlessness produces good results

Sunnyside police join hands with various stakeholders to reduce crime and violation of by-laws.

Sunnyside police, with various law enforcement agencies on Saturday held a massive police operation in the Sunnyside and Brooklyn areas in Pretoria.

Named the High Density operation led by dedicated Sunnyside police station commander Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi, the operation saw police putting 40 undocumented immigrants behind bars.

They also arrested one for dealing in liquor without a licence, four for public drinking, 17 for illegal gambling, one for driving under the influence of alcohol and one for possession of counterfeit goods.

It also saw 22 motorists fined for violating road traffic laws, 10 vehicles tested, 206 vehicles, 418 people, 11 premises and 17 liquor premises were searched.

The police confiscated 15 750 ml of liquor.

In relation to the by-laws, Tshwane metro police supported by the police and the city’s waste management department cleaned up various streets including Robert Sobukwe Street where some illegal hawkers block the sidewalks with their trading stock and also trade beyond regulated trading hours.

“No hawker is allowed to trade beyond 18:00,” Brigadier Kgoadi said.

She said the operation showed that they had upped their game in the fight against flouting of the law, especially by criminals and illegal hawkers.

“We will not get tired of ensuring that we reduce crime and put criminals behind bars,” she said.
She cited that criminals who may still be roaming around the streets should know that their days of being free were numbered.

“When finding them, we will arrest them and they will face the full might of the law,”she said.

The operation proved that Sunnyside police have upped their game in fighting crime as more stakeholders took part in the High Density operation. This enabled the participants to easily and effectively address various problems leading to lawlessness in the area.

The Sunnyside police often worked with, among others, the Tshwane Metro Police, local security companies and Sunnyside Community Police Forum before. However, their integrated approach in fighting crime, seemed to be gaining momentum recently as the number of stakeholders increased.

Other law enforcement agencies that came on board included, among others, the Military Police, Gauteng Traffic Police, Home Affairs and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.

“We are strengthening our fight against crime in the Sunnyside policing precinct in order to reduce it,” Brigadier Kgoadi said, adding that the Sunnyside area had too many entertainment places that needed to be monitored to prevent breaking of the law.
