Tshwane law enforcement agencies clamp down on illegal liquor outlets after tavern killings

Among the arrests during the operations were three suspects caught for robbing a grave at the Kgabalatsane cemetery.

Tshwane law enforcement agencies clamped down on liquor outlets this weekend, following a spate of murders in taverns that made national headlines.

More than 155 liquor outlets were visited and 22 illegal taverns were shut down. Large quantities of alcohol were also confiscated.

“Police will continue to hold inspections to ensure compliance with the Liquor Act,” said District Commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine.

More than 510 arrests were made during the operation led by Thine, SAPS senior management, police units, and other law enforcement agencies from July 15 to the early hours of July 17.

The operations included roadblocks, stop-and-searches, foot patrols, tracing of wanted suspects and compliance inspections at second-hand goods dealers, according to Pretoria North police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.

Tshwane detectives arrested more than 184 wanted suspects of whom 24 were wanted for gender-based violence.

Arrests included three for murders, 34 for drug-related crimes, five for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, 21 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 56 for consuming alcohol in public areas.

Fifty-three illegal immigrants were taken to be processed by the Department of Home Affairs.

Among the arrests during the operations were three suspects caught for robbing a grave at the Kgabalatsane cemetery.

“It is not known whose grave it was as the gravestone was faded,” said Selepe.

One of the suspects was a sangoma.
