Saulville organisation cleans up local corner
The volunteers planted trees, and vegetables not far from the clean-up.
The Saulbent project cleaned up a street corner in Sinoville in commemoration of Mandela Day.
The clean-up took place at the corner of Schuverberg and Mmale streets on July 18.
Stakeholders that were part of the clean-up included Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, Strategic Water Partners Network and Tshwane fm.
According to the founder and director of the project, Mashudu Makhado, they cleaned up the corner in recognition of the former president’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
Makhado said if they don’t clean their environment up, no one else would do it for them.

“Waste is going to consume us soon. We need to clean our environment, we are going to have more waste in the rivers or oceans than fish.
“Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” he said.
Makhado said volunteers also planted trees and vegetables near the corner.
“Trees are important in our daily life. Let’s make our country green.
“Trees produce fruits and fresh air.”

Makhado said vegetables were planted to empower the community.
He said the event was their second Mandela Day clean-up.
“We had our first in 2021 when we also planted trees, onions and beetroot.

Makhado said the project started in 2007 after he noticed all the illegal dumpsites near streams and wetlands.
“When the rivers are polluted, aquatic animals die and we need to protect our animals.
“It is our duty to keep our rivers clean to avoid pollution.
“When it rains, the rubbish flows straight into the rivers,” he said.
