Sediba sa Thuto primary school resumes classes after month of waiting

Parents shut the school down because the classrooms were overcrowded and mobile classrooms were in a terrible condition.

Learners of Sediba sa Thuto primary school in Mamelodi East RDP ext. 18 will no longer miss learning and teaching.

This after the Department of Education delivered three mobile classrooms just a day before the school opened.

There had been no schooling there for almost a month after parents shut the school down protesting the overcrowding of classrooms and the terrible condition of the mobile classrooms.

Parent, Thulani Mabena said the classrooms were severely overcrowded with 74 learners crammed into one making the environment not conducive to learning and teaching.

The much awaited mobile classes at Sediba sa thuto primary school have arrived.

Mabena said he was happy three mobile classes were delivered to the school just in time.

He said a contractor had started installing them and also secured job opportunities for nine locals.

“We are happy that our children will no longer experience or attend in overcrowding classrooms.

“They will have more chairs and tables,” said Mabena but added that their struggle was not done.

“The fight for better education continues, cause we want a brick and mortar school.”

Mabena said two more mobile classrooms and two mobile toilets were yet to be delivered.

Parents want to work hand in hand with the Department of Education to building a new school.

“We are tired of closing schools and our children missing months of schooling,” said Mabena, adding that shutting down the school was a difficult decision forced on them by the terrible state of the school.

DA Gauteng shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho said Gauteng education must ensure that teaching and learning continue without disruption at Sediba sa Thuto primary school in Mamelodi.

He said the learners have been at home denied their right to basic education for far too long.

“There has been no schooling at this school since May because of the shutdown,” he said.

“The parents had requested additional mobile classrooms to ease the overcrowding.

“MEC Panyaza Lesufi has had enough time during the school holidays to ensure that all the much-needed resources are provided to this school.”

He said it is the responsibility of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to provide adequate resources to this school to ensure an environment conducive for teaching and learning.

“The more these learners continue to miss months of schooling, the more they will fall prey to unproductive activities in their community.

“No learner must be deprived their right to basic education. The DA will continue to fight to ensure schooling resumes without further delays at Sediba sa Thuto Primary School.”
