Taxi association gives back to the public

"The late Nelson Mandela loved children, would not like to see them suffering and always encouraged people to love them."

Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association (Mata) celebrated Mandela day by donating hula hoops, scarfs, beanies, gloves and balls to three pre-schools in Mamelodi.

The three pre-schools are the Cathulani and Uthando Christian and Thari ya Mahlogonolo daycares.

Mata chairperson Ben Maredi said the donations were part of giving back to the community and “keeping our small children warm this winter”.

He said the late Nelson Mandela loved children, would not like to see them suffer and always encouraged South Africans to love them.

“The donations were a surprise for the pre-schools,” said Maredi.

The members of the local taxi association had the opportunity to interact with and spend some time with the little children.

The taxi association was represented among other, by a consultant and the executive members.

Maredi said he was happy to see the children’s reactions when they received the gifts.

“Children are our country’s future leaders,” he said.

He added this was not a once-off visit because the association has decided to adopt the three pre-schools.

“We are planning to come back and donate books because the pre-schools complained that they desperately need books,” said Maredi.

“We want to change the image of the taxi industry and work hand-in-hand with the community at large.”

Uthando Christian daycare teacher Sinelizwi Jozana said the generous donations came at just the right time.

“Our children desperately needed these donations. I am happy that our children will come in the morning dressed up and have more toys to play with during the day,” said Jozana.

Jozana thanked the association on behalf of the other pre-schools and encouraged the association to continue doing good in the community.
