Monaca tavern shooting suspect arrested

The search is ongoing for the two suspects who are still on the run.

Police have arrested a man suspected of being responsible for the July Monaco tavern shooting in Mamelodi.

The 25-year-old suspect, who has been on the list of the police’s most-wanted suspects, was arrested in Mamelodi by the Tshwane anti-drug unit and Mamelodi combat team on November 24, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo.

The suspect was found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition linked to several cases that include car hijacking, murder and attempted murder.

In the early hours of July 11, three suspects wearing balaclavas and armed with pistols arrived at the tavern where patrons were enjoying themselves.

“The trio fired in the air before approaching a 33-year-old man and fatally shooting him in the head twice,” said Masondo.

No other persons were shot.

The search is ongoing for the two other suspects who are still on the run.

Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the team behind the arrest.

“I am pleased with the manner and vigour in which this team has been handling the investigation. I am confident that those who are still on the run will also be apprehended soon,” said Mthombeni.

The suspect will appear before the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on Monday, November 28.
