Ward 50 councillor sends seasons greetings to residents

Residents in ward 50 are encouraged to contact Breytenbach for any municipal-related issues on 081 733 0000.

Ward 50 councillor Lenise Breytenbach, would like to wish each and every resident and business owner in her ward a Merry Christmas.

“This is the time of giving and spending time with family. In a world where everything is being rushed, we need to sit down and take some time off.”

Breytenbach has been working all year round to ensure her ward receives adequate service delivery, however, this is not always possible due to circumstances beyond her control.

Positive improvements in the ward

A few major clean-ups in the area have removed vagrants after members of the community raised concerns about their safety.
Just recently 66 illegal squatters were removed from private property with the assistance of various law enforcement agencies.
The owner of the land picked up the cost of cleaning the area and planned to build a perimeter wall to keep illegal squatters out.

Earlier this year two additional clean-ups that removed over 200 illegal squatters were conducted and land that used to be an eyesore for residents was cleaned.
“We will be hosting another clean-up soon and to avoid the land being used for dumping, we want to make use of the metro’s Adopt a Spot initiative.”

Issues in the ward

One of the big projects in ward 50 is the replacement of the old water supply pipes that haven’t been replaced for over 50 years.

“This big one-year project that recently started doesn’t come without its own challenges as in some instances a pipe may be replaced in one area and there may be a water leak two or three metres away. The response team works around the clock to ensure that these leaks are resolved as soon as possible.
However, residents need to understand that the team assists the entire region and not just ward 50.”

Open trenches have become even more prevalent with the recent pipe work. Breytenbach explained that the trenches are left open for a few days to ensure that there are no leaks after the pipes are replaced.
“They have to be left open for a period of five days to ensure that the installation went well. We have ensured that there is a net around the open trenches to avoid people walking into them.”

Another big problem facing the whole of the north is potholes that have left motorists fed up with the poor road conditions.

“The teams are currently playing catch up to ensure that all backlog reports are sorted. However, rains have contributed to the backlog as teams are unable to fill the potholes when the surface is wet.

“When it comes to repairs I think we are doing well compared to other regions.”
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting potholes to the metro so that these can be recorded.

Plans for 2023
– Repairing streetlights will be top priority.
– Painting car park markings at the schools.
“We have noted that park markings have faded and parents do not know where to park which causes traffic. We want to decrease the congestion by having visible markings.”
– Planning more clean-ups to keep the ward clean.

Residents of ward 50 are encouraged to contact Breytenbach for any municipal-related issues on 081 733 0000.
