One-year-old among three killed in Centurion accident

Thirteen others were injured, including two infants now in critical condition.

A tragic Christmas is in store for the families and friends of three people that died in an accident yesterday.

A serious accident on the N14 near Knoppieslaagte Street claimed the lives of three, including a one-year-old child, a 12-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman at 08:30 on December 22.

Two infants are in serious condition and 11 others were injured.
The accident involved a double cab bakkie carrying all the victims of the crash.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said: “Upon arrival on the scene, paramedics were met with absolute mayhem as the twisted frame of a double cab bakkie rested on its roof across the width of the roadway.”

Van Reenen said that medics had to establish an on-scene triage area to handle all the injuries.

Once medics had inspected the accident scene, they found 13 occupants of the vehicle to have suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Three people were declared dead on arrival when medics arrived. A one-year-old boy, a 24-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy were killed in the accident.

Of the 13 injured, two infants were among the worst injured.
“Two infants were found in a critical condition and advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilise them before they were airlifted to specialist facilities for immediate care,” said Van Reenen.

Eleven other patients were treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to nearby hospitals by ambulances for further care.
