Police minister to inspect festive season operations
Cele will be engaging with communities, inspecting roadblocks and engaging with activists and members of the religious community.
The police ministry will be conducting a roadshow and multi-agency parade in Pretoria on Friday, December 23.
The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, will lead the annual festive season inspection roadshow in Gauteng and on Friday will be attending operations in Pretoria.
The ministry said in a statement that the visit would form part of efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS), to channel resources to areas where they are needed most.
The ministry statement explained: “The policing interventions will enable the police to decisively deal with crime and any security threats this holiday season and beyond.”
Under the theme, “More boots on the ground towards enhanced police visibility,” the ministry together with the SAPS management team from national and provincial levels, will assess the effectiveness of the SAPS’ Safer Festive Season operational plans put already underway, to ensure the well-being and safety of residents and tourists during the holiday period.
According to Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), crime traditionally almost doubles during the festive season.
The project is led by National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola and the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General, Elias Mawela.
The Gauteng leg of the Roadshow will include visits to centres of entertainment and business, taxi ranks, multi-disciplinary roadblocks and engagements with GBV activists and leaders of the religious fraternity.
The roadshow will begin at Akasia Soccer Field, Hebron Road from 09:20. It will then move to the Mabopane Station, Soshanguve Crossing Mall, and Wonder Park Mall for community engagement from 10:15, 11:15, and 12:00 respectively.
It will then conclude with a roadblock site visit at the Kgosi Mampuru inbound road at 14:00.
