223 Babies born in Gauteng on Christmas day
The Gauteng department of health released number that showed at least 50 babies were born in Pretoria on Christmas day.
The Gauteng Department of Health stated that there were 223 Christmas babies born at their facilities on Christmas day.
The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Normantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, visited Bertha Gxowa Hospital where two sets of twins were born on Christmas day. The MEC visited the newborns to celebrate with their families and present them with gifts.
Nkomo-Ralehoko said “The department wishes to extend its appreciation to healthcare workers who have been working tirelessly throughout the year ensuring that the people of Gauteng receive the best service when visiting health facilities.”
“Thank you for always making Christmas time is cheerful and filled with love. We wish all parents well and encourage mothers to opt for breastfeeding their babies as it is essential and has many health benefits for their babies,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said.

The Netcare Akasia Maternity ward informed Rekord that they had expected a delivery and even organised gifts, but by the end of the day they were still waiting.
Life Wilgers maternity ward said that only one baby was born at their facility on Christmas day.
Steve Biko hospital delivered six babies, two males and four females.
Overall, 30 babies were born at Gauteng academic hospitals, 18 males and 12 females. There were 31 infants born at Gauteng tertiary hospital; 15 males and 16 females, including a set of twins, a male and a female. A total of 125 babies were born at Regional and District hospitals; 74 males and 51 females, including three sets of twins.

Nkomo-Ralehoko urged new parents to register their bundle of joy’s birth as quickly as possible at the Home Affairs office. She also urged parents to do the best for their babies and get them vaccinated against infectious diseases and reminded parents that this could be done for free at all government clinics and community healthcare facilities.
