More police visibility at local malls

The safety campaign is a reinforcement plan that guaranteed safety for consumers starting at Denlyn mall.

Mamelodi police together with the local CPF said they will increase their visibility at malls.

Police spokesperson, Captain Johannes Maheso said no time should be wasted when it comes to instituting a safety campaign.

He said the safety campaign is a reinforcement plan to guarantee the safety of consumers starting at Denlyn mall from Black Friday into the festive season.

“We are looking after the consumers, stores at shopping malls and the public at large by increasing the number of patrollers at the malls to prevent crime from occurring at this time of the year,” said Maheso.

He said the consumers this year would not have to stress about crime because there was more police visibility and “each corner at the mall you will see patrollers”.

Maheso said the public was also advised to be careful when shopping at the malls.

The police warned the public about armed robbery, common robbery, assault, theft from vehicles, house burglaries and robberies at ATMs.

“In previous years we had several incidents where consumers were victims of scams during the festive seasons and their hard-earned money or property was easily taken away from them.”

Maheso said the police and CPF visibility campaigns at malls would continue next year.

He said scammers used different modus operandi.

“Some pretend to be workers in different shops, while others claim to be fortune tellers or police officers.”

Maheso also handed out pamphlets on festive season safety:

– Do not try to buy “back door” goods.

– Do not listen to anyone who claims to be a fortune teller, even if they claim that you are going to die.

– Do not reveal your personal details over the phone.

– Do not buy things in the street or outside of shops even if the person claims to be a representative thereof.

The police also warned motorists not to park in remote or isolated places

The public was further warned about public drinking, drunk driving and alcohol abuse.

Maheso said thefts out of motor vehicles increased during the festive season because of increased shopping.

He said social club and stokvel dividends must be deposited into member accounts.

He warned that abuse of alcohol led to GBV and other domestic violence.

Maheso advised customers to approach mall security or the police at the mall when they needed assistance.

He advised consumers to go inside the bank or to security guards at the mall for assistance.

He encouraged residents to report any crimes to the 10111 police line.
