306 arrested for GBV in Mabopane and Loate

“Two persons were arrested for the possession of illicit cigarettes with 405 920 loose cigarettes confiscated.”

Tshwane district police arrested 347 people for various criminal offences, most of them for gender-based violence (GBV), in Mabopane and Loate policing precincts on Thursday.

The arrests follow a crime prevention operation in the area led by the newly appointed district commissioner Major-General Azwindini Nengovhela.

Out of the 347 arrests, 306 were for GBV.

“The arrests show that the district takes GBV seriously,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.

“The police in that area are working hard on it because crimes against women and children will not be tolerated.”

The operation also saw 30 undocumented persons arrested and a person arrested for aiding and abetting illegal immigrants.

Five suspects were arrested for possession of dagga.

Thirteen premises, 1 075 persons and 814 vehicles were searched while 272 Aarto fines were issued to the value of R117 00, according to Van Dyk.

“Ten liquor premises were inspected and searched, resulting in six being closed, 239 760ml liquor were confiscated and fines to the value of R9 500 were issued,” he said.

Nengovhela thanked the officers for their determination and commitment to creating a safe environment for the citizens of Tshwane.

The suspects will appear in various magistrate’s courts in the north of Pretoria soon.
