Police seize cigarettes worth R100 000 in Mamelodi West

The police found suspected stolen cigarettes and a bakkie abandoned at a house in Mamelodi West, Section C1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Mamelodi police need help in finding the owner of a charcoal Toyota bakkie and cigarettes valued around R100 000 recovered in the area on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Sergeant Daphney Maila said while responding to a shots-fired complaint in Nxumalo Street in Mamelodi West, they stumbled into what they think was a crime in progress elsewhere in the area.

Maila said when police did not see anything in Nxumalo Street, they continued with their regular patrols.

She said in the afternoon in Ntuli Street in Section C1, they observed a group of suspicious men moving around vehicles and called for back-up.

“While waiting for back-up, they noticed a white Toyota Legend bakkie outside the house and a group of men suspiciously moving around,” said Maila.

She said when police stopped outside, a man stormed out of the house and sped off in the white bakkie. The group of men ran away in different directions.

Police fired two warning shots to warn the driver to stop as they chased after the vehicle without success.

“The police returned to the house and found a charcoal Toyota bakkie parked inside the yard with boxes of cigarettes in the back and more on the floor,” she added.

Upon further investigation, police found a man sleeping in the house.

She said the man alleged he is from Mpumalanga and knows nothing about the boxes. He told police he had heard people talking outside as he slept and assumed it was the owner of the house.

Acting station commander Colonel Simon Makgopa applauded the police for the good work done and encouraged them to continue working with integrity to combat and investigate crime.

The bakkie and its contents have all been booked at the station for someone to claim since no stolen vehicle and product have been reported to police.

Maila said police are investigating but no arrest has been made yet.

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect, can phone the investigating detective Sergeant Mdau on 082 491 5786 or 08600 10 111 or 112 from all networks.
