Car thieves, hijackers target particular car models in Sinoville

“Ford Ranger seems to be high on the list currently.”

Car thieves and hijackers in Sinoville, in particular, target VW Polos, Nissan NP200s, Toyota Hilux bakkies, Toyota Etioses and, especially, Ford Rangers.

“Ford Ranger seems to be high on the list currently,” said Lizzete du Plooy, a spokesperson for the Sinoville CPF.

This was, as the CPF said, more and more cases of stolen vehicles have been reported as of late in the precinct.

“Motorists should remain vigilant when driving or stopping. They must be aware of their surroundings, especially at night.”

She said people should avoid parking on the side of the street when visiting friends or family.

“If you have to park outside, park in a well-lit area and keep an eye on your vehicle.”

Du Plooy’s remarks were supported by the latest crime stats released by police minister Bheki Cele, who has also confirmed that car and motorcycle theft has increased in Sinoville.

The precinct has recorded an increase of 2.2% in motor vehicle theft since the start of this year.

Ninety-four cases of car theft have been recorded, making it the highest since 2021.

Reports are that criminals were targeting the most popular car models due to the high demand for their parts.

“As a community, we need to come together and start fighting back,” Du Plooy said.

“Therefore, we encourage people to join our CPF to fight crime in our neighbourhood.”

To improve communication and response time, she emphasised the importance of sleeping with your CPF radio on channel 4.

“This will ensure that we can quickly and effectively communicate with each other in case of an emergency.”

The CPF had the following tips:

– Never keep a set of spare keys in the vehicle.

– Avoid leaving documents with your address in the vehicle.

– Take pictures of your vehicle for description purposes.

– Know exactly where you keep registration information; send a copy to a family member or friend.

– Know your tracking company and have contact details handy; know the alert procedure.

She urged residents to report any suspicious activity in the area.
