Security guard treated for smoke inhalation at Corobay

The generator room was opened for ventilation and the fire was extinguished, says EMS Charles Mabaso.

A security guard at Corobay building in Menlyn Maine was treated for smoke inhalation after a generator caught fire on Wednesday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, employees at the building evacuated when the guard notified them of the fire.

“We quickly evacuated when the fire broke out. I am not sure how big it was but luckily some people came to help extinguish it,” the eyewitness said.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso confirmed the incident, adding that the matter was reported around 11:00.

Mabaso, however, told Rekord that it was not the building that caught fire but the generator.

“The emergency services department arrived on the scene to find a generator room filled with smoke. The room was opened for ventilation and the fire extinguished.

“One man, reported to be a security officer, was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to hospital in a stable condition,” Mabaso said.

Mabaso further said officials had not yet established the cause of the fire.

The Corobay building corner is an upmarket commercial park in the heart of Menlyn.
