Two fires at Magalieskruin garden refuse site in one week

According to the community, the risk of the fires spreading to surrounding areas is particularly high, due to the dry conditions and high winds that are typical of the season.

The garden refuse site in Koorsboom Road Magalieskruin in the north, reported two fire incidents in one week.

The fires have caused damage to the building at the dumpsite.

The first fire was on Wednesday (August 15) and the second on Saturday night (August 20).

The fires have left the community concerned about safety this fire season.

According to the community, the risk of the fires spreading to surrounding areas is particularly high, due to the dry conditions and high winds that are typical of the season.

As the cause of the fires is unknown, the Sinoville firefighting association – a registered public benefit organisation that is actively preventing and combating fires in the area – announced open fires, as well as ash pits, were prohibited until November, without a permit.

According to the National Forest & Wildfire Act (Act 101 of 1998) those who do not obey the rules will face penalties which include jail time or fine amounting to R10 000.

The Act sets out the maximum penalties for each offence but a court can use its discretion on the appropriate penalty.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said no injury was reported in these fires.

Mabaso said the Wednesday fire was extinguished with the assistance of the local CPF.

He said it was reported that a section of the dumpsite building caught alight again on Saturday.

“The fire was subsequently extinguished.”

He said it has not yet been determined what caused the fires.

Mabaso advised residents to report a fire on the toll-free number 107 or 012 358 6300/6400.
