Sundowns Ladies’ Andisiwe Mgcoyi relishes her Cosafa Golden Boot win

With her three goals scored in this year’s competition, Andisiwe Mgcoyi has now accumulated a total of nine goals at the COSAFA zonal qualifiers.

Andisiwe Mgcoyi, veteran star forward for Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, is still basking in the glory of her Golden Boot award win at the Cosafa zonal qualifier.

Sundowns Ladies claimed the title in style, and Mgcoyi’s stellar performance on the pitch played a big part in the team’s success.

Her sharp shooting and quick feet were on full display as she outshone the competition and left the crowd cheering.

The crowd went wild as Mgcoyi’s name was announced the Golden Boot winner.

The striker, who scored three goals in the competition, was visibly ecstatic as she stepped up to receive her award.

Her contribution to the team’s triumph was undeniable, and her joy infectious

The Brazilians beat Double Action Ladies 2-0 to secure their second Cosafa zonal qualifier title and book a place at the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League in Ivory Coast in November.

Despite battling injuries that sidelined her for much of the season, Mgcoyi showed no sign of rust as she dominated the regional tournament.

She put her experience and skill on full display, proving that she is still one of the most lethal strikers in the game.

Her performance was a testament to her dedication, drive, and her journey is an inspiration to young players everywhere.

The 35-year-old striker netted once in the 4-0 victory against Eswatini’s Young Buffaloes and secured a double against Mozambique’s CD Costa do Sol.

She said she didn’t see this coming and was shocked when her name was called because several players were tied on three goals.

“I consider this Golden Boot a life’s blessing. This award holds immense significance for me and I feel truly blessed. Here’s to many more victories this season,” Mgcoyi stated.

She also emphasised her motivating factor for participating in the Cosafa tournament.

“I am one of those players who thinks ahead of most things. While we were playing the Hollywoodbets Super League, my mind was already on Cosafa because the title remained our only ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League.”

She said she is already thinking about the other two competitions now and her mindset is focused on planning for the future.

“That doesn’t mean I don’t care about the present, but my aspirations extend to the broader horizon of future opportunities.”

The veteran striker was among a highly competitive group of players who each concluded the tournament on three goals.

Her teammates Lelona Daweti, Chuene Morifi and Tiisetso Makhubela were part of this impressive achievement. Additionally, Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse and Lesego Radiakanyo both of Double Action Ladies, shared in this impressive feat.

The Masandawana striker, who also coaches the Sundowns youth development girls’ teams, believes that the Cosafa win will set the tone for the season ahead.

“Now that we have reclaimed the regional title, we need to build on this victory as we move forward. Thankfully, we have several games in the Hollywoodbets Super League to prepare us for the massive continental battle ahead.”

She said much like the Cosafa competition, the CAF Champions League is another tournament the team is eagerly anticipating, especially given how they lost last year’s final.

Mgcoyi’s three goals in this year’s Cosafa zonal qualifiers bring her total to nine goals in the tournament.

She scored two goals in last year’s competition and four in 2021, making her one of the most prolific scorers in the tournament’s history.

Her ability to find the back of the net is a testament to her remarkable consistency and dedication to the game.
