NGO hopes to return to clean-up programme

“We have not cleaned up for a month because of the Tshwane metro strike.”

Local NGO, the Soulbent Project, recently announced that it’s gone a month without conducting clean-ups due to the ongoing strike.

Co-founder Mashudu Makhado said this while promoting the organisation’s September 16 World Clean-Up Day initiative.

“We have not cleaned up for a month, because of the Tshwane metro strike,” said Makhado.

“It has negatively affected our programme. The litter will soon consume us if we don’t fight it now.

“One day we will wake up and find we have more litter in our rivers than fish. More litter near our homes is not good for our health. We need to get rid of litter, as it brings rats and sickness,” he said.

According to volunteers, attacks and disruptions of waste collection services were a common trend during the strike.

They said the metro hasn’t been assisting them.

The Soulbent Project is known for hosting weekly cleanups from Monday to Friday. The NGO hopes things will get back on track after World Clean-Up Day.

It said that it’s important to clean our environment as it cannot clean itself. World Clean-up Day unites millions of volunteers and NGOs that work every day with no support or appreciation.

The theme for this year is “The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion”.

The team plans to tackle Saulsville ext. 6, the Mabunda Supermarket on the corner of Maunde and Vergenoeg Street in Saulsville, Mohlatswa and Vergenoeg Street, Mmale Street ext. 6 corner of Schurverberg and Phatudi Secondary School on the corner of Makhadza Street.

Stakeholders involved include Gauteng’s departments of agriculture, rural development and environment, water and sanitation, as well as of environmental affairs, Pulset Kids Academy, the Tshwane metro, Necsa and many others.

The NGO still needs help with plastic bags, wheelbarrows, shovels, spades, sun hats, gloves, mineral water bottles, and medical aid kits.
