Rooihuiskraal animals saved from feed shortage

The Lions Club of Centurion Lifestlye donated 30 bales of feed to the popular community landmark.

The Lions Club of Centurion Lifestyle stepped in to help feed the animals of Rooihuiskraal historical terrain.

The club was responding to a call for assistance, as the municipal strike over a wage dispute affected feed supply to the popular community landmark.

“The club donated 30 bales, sourced from Cullinan. It will last for about four days,” says member Gerrit van Eck.

“We try to step in when we see a need in the community,” he said.

Rooihuiskraal historical terrain and animal farm is a portion of what was once the Brakfontein farm.

The site boasts many animals as well as a children’s play area, braai and picnic spots, and function facilities.

Van Eck said that the club stepped in while alternative arrangements were made for the city’s delivery of feed.

The feed was procured by Johan Potgieter and transported from Cullinan by Jack Page.

Councillor Cindy Billson was thankful for the assistance, adding that the impact of the strikes was far-reaching.

“With the strike being as it is, it is making it difficult for the city to take care of all the service delivery issues in the city. One of them was obtaining and providing the required food for the animals at Rooihuiskraal.”

“The city managed to, with a long difficult path, get the new bales too.”

Billson said that private transport had to be organised as city officials were being targeted and could not make the delivery for fear of their safety.

The councillor said that any resident who would like to donate to or get involved was welcome to contact her.

“The site is always in need for food and to grow the facility,” she said.
