Passengers robbed on R80 highway after minibus taxi breaks down

Seven armed men pounce on taxi driver trying to establish the problem with his broken taxi, then rob passengers of their belongings.

Over 15 people lost their belongings on the R80 highway after their minibus taxi broke down and was robbed.

According to a police spokesperson Warrant-Officer Johann van Dyk the incident happened on Friday night.

Van Dyk said the taxi came to a sudden stop due to a mechanical breakdown on the Mabopane highway towards the Rosslyn offramp.

While the driver was waiting for help, seven armed men pounced on them.

“The suspects approached the taxi and pointed a firearm at the driver,” Van Dyk said.

He said the suspects then robbed the passengers.

Van Dyk said the suspects forced the victims into the nearby bush and then fled the scene with their cellphones and other undisclosed property.

He said no injury was reported and the value of the belongings is yet to be established.

Akasia police are investigating a case of robbery.

Van Dyk urged anyone with information to contact the police.

The Rosslyn CPF and local taxi associations are expected to meet soon to discuss ways to safeguard the area.
