Rooihuiskraal garden site ablaze again

Firefighters battled the blaze on Sunday night, while ward councillor Cindy Billson urged residents with any information to help the investigation to come forward.

A fire at the Rooihuiskraal garden refuse site was extinguished on Sunday night, September 17.

There have been several fires at the Rooihuiskraal and Kruger Avenue garden refuse sites in the past weeks.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson, deputy chief Charles Mabaso confimed the fire was attended to by Tshwane firefighters.

Ward councillor Cindy Billson said unknown people set the site alight.

“Sadly we have a lot of household waste that was dumped here,” said Billson.

Since the illegal municipal strike began at the end of July, frustrated residents and unscrupulous waste removal companies began illegally dumping household and garden refuse at the sites.

“Some of the cylinders and bottles, especially alcohol bottles, are exploding, which puts these people’s lives in danger and further fuels the fire.”

She said that The Reeds CPF Wierdabrug Sector 2 representatives were first on-site, and later Scorpion security, Tshwane metro police and SAPS.

“We are trying to establish who set the site alight,” Billson said.

“I want to ask you all, please, if you drove past the Rooihuiskraal garden site between 18:00 and 19:00 and saw any vehicle or person on-site, please send me a private message so we can investigate.

“There are eyewitnesses that can place people on-site before the site started burning.”

Councillor Billson requested residents to send her an email to ward69centurion@gmail.com and Phutijm@tshwane.gov.za.
