Storm wreaks widespread havoc in the Moot

More than 3 000 residents in the Moot are reported to be without power currently.

A heavy windstorm on Tuesday night caused extensive damage to infrastructure, power supply, and trees right across the Moot.

According to DA councillor Elma Nel, the damage extends across the Moot, with trees uprooted and snapped power cables hanging over roads.

“Fortunately, the mayor has emergency teams available, but they have to focus on fixing the damage across Pretoria,” said Nel.

She said she received numerous complaints last night and the metro was dealing with them to the best of its ability.

“There is a power cable in front of my house across my driveway that was snapped by the wind,” said a resident of Sixth Avenue in Wonderboom South.

“A tree just knocked down our power cable and gate,” said Nancy Naude of 22nd Avenue in Rietfontein on Facebook last night, as she asked for advice on where to report the damage.

A Mountain View resident posted a video showing the roof of his grandmother’s garden cottage on his Felix Street property that had been ripped off.

“According to reports, so far 3 000 homes are without power in the Moot because of the storm,” said Nel. “It will take time to address all the different causes of these outages.”

She said everyone is grateful there were no serious injuries, though damage assessment is still ongoing.
