Centurion reservoirs low

The city said that Tuesdays storm and subsequent power failures exacerbated an already strained system.

Centurion residents are urged to use water sparingly or risk running out.

This as the Tshwane metro struggles water supply problems and level 1 restrictions as a hot weekend peaking at 33°C on Saturday is expected, said the South African weather service.

“It is important to highlight that the thunderstorm and power failure incidents occurred while the city’s and mainly Rand Water’s systems were under severe strain due to high water consumption, which exacerbates the situation,” the metro said in a statement.

“The city urges residents to adopt water-saving measures to reduce high consumption and avoid a total collapse of the system.”

Rand Water informed the metro that water production was hampered due to a power trip at the Zuikerbosch water treatment plant on Thursday, September 21, following disruptive winds on Tuesday.

“Attempts to restart the plant revealed faults along the overhead power lines supplying the plant. The power failure resulted in the loss in production of 2 000 million litres of water per day.”

While the Mapleton system, which supplies mainly the eastern parts of Tshwane, has since recovered and is pumping at full load, others have been unstable.

Reservoirs in the Palmiet system, supplying the western part of Tshwane, have been isolated due to critically low levels to avoid loss of supply.

RESERVOIRS CRITICALLY LOW TO EMPTY

The city said this meant that some reservoirs were not receiving supply from Rand Water and the following reservoirs were critically low to empty:

– Bakenkop

– Brakfontein

– Erasmia

– Kosmosdal

– Laudium

– Louwlardia

– Mnandi

– Raslouw

– Rooihuiskraal

– Carina Street

– Corobrick Plant

– Klapperkop

– Hatherley Meter

Therefore residents in Erasmusrand, Waterkloof, Rietfontein, Zwavelpoort, Monumnetpark, Lynnwood, Eastwood, Groenkloof and Arcadia could experience loss of water.

In the Moot, central and north from Kalafong Heights, Saulsville, Amandasig, Rosslyn, The Orchards, Wonderboom, Anilin, Onderstepoort, Ninapark, Rooiwal, Sinoville to Lotus gardens were at risk of supply interruption.

Finally, residents in and near Soshanguve from, Sterkwater, Rietgat to Sunderland Ridge and Onderstepoort could also be affected.
