Pulamadibogo ‘space cookie’ learners discharged from hospital

GDE MEC expresses joy over the recovery of school kids

Eighty-seven Pulamadibogo primary school learners hospitalised after consuming space cookies have been discharged.

Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane announced he was pleased that all were out of the woods and the police investigation into the incident was still underway.

“We are relieved that the affected learners were discharged following this saddening incident. We wish the remaining three a speedy recovery,” said the MEC.

On Wednesday a school teacher called emergency services after noticing strange behaviour from the learners, a later investigation found had consumed muffins laced with dagga.

According to the Department of Education, the learners were treated at Dr George Mukhari academic hospital.

Departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona revealed that three learners remained at the facility for further observations.

“Although the 87 learners are discharged there are subsequently, only three girl learners remain in hospital, and they are still receiving the necessary medical attention to return to full health,” added Mabona.

Two men believed to have sold the space cookies to learners are expected to make their first appearance in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court.

Parents of the learners want the duo charged with attempted murder, adding that the court should not show them mercy.
