Residents encouraged to call out GBV during Heritage Day event

Sector 1 Atteridgeville is said to suffer from high rates of hijacking, murder, robbery with firearms and rape.

Atteridgeville residents were encouraged to report gender-based violence to the police during a Heritage Day event hosted at a local library.

The Atteridgeville SAPS, CPF and other stakeholders hosted the event at Tsunami Library in Atteridgeville ext. 7.

Thami Mogomane of Sector 1 CPF sensitised the community to the danger of unreported domestic violence.

Mogomane said alcohol abuse is a main contributing factor to all the crimes committed in the sector including GBV.

“We want to advise you all as members of the community that victims must make use of the victim empowerment centre at Atteridgeville police station,” Mogomane stated.

Atteridgeville station commander Brigadier Moeketsi Rapitsi commended the work done by the Sector 1 CPF members, stating that he wished all sector commanders were there to copy the executive of Sector 1 and do the same in their sectors.

Rapitsi however emphasised that there is still work to be done as crime is too frequent of an occurrence in the sector.

“This sector is the one that is contributing too much to crime in our area. In short, the main crimes we suffer from include; hijacking, murder, robbery with firearms and rape. We urge members of the community to work with the CPF and police to fight crime by reporting perpetrators even anonymously,” Rapitsi stated.

Pamphlets on domestic violence, GBV and road safety tips were distributed and 1 200 members of the community were reached.

The youth played indigenous cultural games while others participated in the Mr and Miss Heritage competitions. Cultural dances, dramas, and poems were also performed by members of the community.

Lerato Selebalo, a Grade 5 girl, aged 10 recited a poem about alcohol abuse. The poem was about a man coming home drunk and beating his wife and kids for no reason.
