Aspiring Pretoria east model wins Face of Fashion competition

The criteria for entry were that the models must be over 16 years but under 23 and taller than 1,74m if female and taller than 1,83m if male.

Aspiring Pretoria east model and home-schooled learner Luché Wilkins and Keenan Chetty of Johannesburg are the Brooklyn Mall Face Of Fashion winners.

The competition is an extension of SA Fashion Week. The criteria for entry were that the models must be between 16 and 23 years old, and for female models, be taller than 1.74m and for males, 1.83m. They could not be registered with a South African modelling agency.

They walked the runway in the competition finale on March 3 with 18 other hopefuls from more than 400 entries.

For the past 27 years, SA Fashion Week has been giving talented designers and models a platform to showcase their creativity and modelling skills.

The competition had many aspiring young models lined up the past week to have their measurements taken and to walk before a panel of judges.

They took to the catwalk in the atrium of the centre during daily fashion shows from Friday March 1, showing the designs of the South Africa’s foremost designers.

The two winners will walk the runway at SA Fashion Week where spring and summer fashion will be the focus during the week of September 23 – 1 October 1 in Johannesburg..

The prizes also included representation through Ice Models Johannesburg and a R10 000 Brooklyn Mall gift voucher.

Before the announcement of the winners Lucilla Booyzen, founder and chief executive of SA Fashion Week, said the 20 finalists all have the talent and vision to become full-time models.

“But a winner usually has that ‘it-factor that speaks to the camera or the audience at a runway,” said Booyzen.

The models were seen in designs by Rubicon, Pretoria designer Michael Ludwig, Ephymol and Imprint.

Some of South Africa’s favourite local designers’ ready-to-wear clothes were also on show in a pop-up shop in the atrium, including the Thabo Makheta’s luxury couture collection with an African feel catching the eye.

Imprint’s bright hues of pink, blue and orange of took centre stage but were balanced by the black male model collection of industry stalwart, Ephymol.

Interns, lecturers and alumni from Pretoria’s Stadio School of Fashion gave the organisers a hand in the competition, shows and backstage logistics to keep the show on the road.
