Young star goalkeeper aims high

Goalkeeper Kgotso Mpeta helped his team to win the U11 Malfa League championship in Mamelodi by producing brilliant saves.

Dlalisa Moyeni FC U11 star goalkeeper Kgotso Mpeta has a dream to play in the Premier Soccer League one day.

The 10-year-old from Section A3 Mamelodi West recently helped his team to win the overall U11 Malfa League championships in Mamelodi.

His team won the league as he helped them to score 1-0 against the champions in Mamelodi East, Entokozweni FC.

Mpeta produced brilliant saves to help his team be crowned the Mamelodi champions on Saturday.

The Grade 6 learner said his dream is to play at professional level and one day wear the Bafana Bafana jersey.

Mpeta said he started playing in the streets before joining local football teams, where he met his goalkeeper coach, Reggy Nare.

He is inspired by Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and internationally, his favourite goalkeeper is Kepa Arrizabalaga of Real Madrid FC.

Nare, the founder of Mamelodi Goalkeepers Academy, said he started working with Mpeta last July to teach him the basics.

He said the youngster learns fast and he believed that with dedication, he will one day turn pro.

“The academy helped Mpeta to improve his diving skills, distribution of balls in a match, as well as jumping techniques,” said Nare.

According to Nare, the youngster trains four times a week from Tuesday to Friday with another goalkeeper for one hour and 30 minutes.

Nare advised the youth of Mamelodi, especially young boys, to focus on their studies and stay away from drugs and crime.

“They destroy lives. Rather participate in different sports activities. Mamelodi has a lot of talent and the youth need to search for their talent by participating in different sporting codes.”
