Hazeldean Lakes Race brings gated communities together

De Klerk says the funds will go to advanced crime-fighting technologies, including drones for the local security group.

Over 500 participants took part in the Hazeldean Lakes Race on March 21 to help raise funds for the local security group, Lakes Security Group.

Participants could bike-ride or run various distances and enjoy safety demonstrations from the security partners involved as well as all the other stalls and amenities.

Director of the Lakes Security Forum and Ward 101 councillor, Malcolm de Klerk, said the aim was to primarily bring the community closer together.

“It’s important for us because, particularly in the Silver Lakes/Hazeldean area, there are a lot of estates and gated communities, and we want to bridge that divide and get people to come to a commonplace and bond together,” De Klerk said.

De Klerk said the funds from the run will go to advanced crime-fighting technologies, including drones for the security group.

“Crime has evolved and has gotten to a point where having to deploy drones, tampers on electricity lines and things like that to meet and combat the evolution of crime in the Pretoria east area,” De Klerk said.

De Klerk says the security has its golf day coming up, and some big names will be invited to play a few rounds at the Silver Lakes Golf Estate.

He thanked all who participated and looked forward to advancing the fight against crime.

“Residents of Ward 101, in particular, we are battling the forces of crime every single day to protect and we’re winning. When we are in this together, we are stronger together,” De Klerk concluded.
