Man arrested in north for impersonating Gauteng traffic police

The suspect was arrested after raising suspicion when he failed to produce any credible identification or documentation on the questioned traffic employment.

A man has been arrested in Mabopane earlier this week for impersonating a police official.

Police spokesperson Johan Van Dyk said the man was spotted during a stop-and-search operation at a transport hub in the area.

He said the suspect aroused suspicion because though he was in Gauteng traffic police uniform, he wore neither police cap nor their prescribed shoes.

“He looked suspicious as he was not wearing a cap but was wearing civilian shoes with the uniform.”

Van Dyk said the suspect could not provide his appointment certificate, nor give his personal number when quizzed.

He said during interrogation, the suspect admitted he was visiting his girlfriend from Vosloorus and was not a traffic officer.

“During a search an illegal firearm was found in his possession.”

In a statement posted to social media, the Gauteng department of community safety said the man has been charged with impersonating a traffic officer and possession of an illegal firearm.

“While on patrol in Mabopane, the members apprehended a suspicious individual wearing a traffic uniform after failing to provide valid credentials. The suspect was charged for impersonation and being in possession of an illegal firearm.”
