Warning: Severe thunderstorms and hail expected in Pretoria

The SA Weather Services issued a high-level four warning for severe thunderstorms and hail in Pretoria today.

A high-level four warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms and hail in Pretoria today.

The SA Weather Services (SAWS) urged the public to remain indoors and away from metal objects.

“Localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements, and susceptible roads and minor to major vehicle accidents are possible due to poor driving visibility and slippery road conditions.”

Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department called on communities to remain alert for thunderstorms and inclement weather escalating.

The impact of severe thunderstorms may include the following:

  • Localised service disruptions due to power failures
  • Localised damage due to large amounts of small hail

We call on communities to observe the following safety measures:

  • Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects
  • Do not go fishing or play golf, as both golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity
  • Avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads, bridges and swollen streams
  • Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy rain and excessive lighting can accompany storms

“We further call on residents to be vigilant and to immediately report any fire or rescue incidents on 107 (toll-free) or 012 358 6300/6400. For ambulance services, call 112 (toll-free),” Thabo Charles Mabaso said.

He also encouraged residents to monitor the warnings and alerts issued by the South African Weather Service and other credible sources and to follow the recommended safety tips immediately.

Several areas in and around Pretoria also have been left without electricity.

The City of Tshwane said due to weather conditions, residents can expect delays in the restoration of power outages.
